Purpose of the job

The Planner is responsible for preparing and coordinating vessel, yard, and rail plans to ensure efficient cargo flow and smooth terminal operations. This role supports operational teams by providing accurate plans, timely updates, and clear instructions that align with customer requirements, safety standards, and terminal capacity. The Planner works closely with multiple departments to ensure that vessel, yard, and rail activities are executed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Responsabilities:

•    Prepare vessel stowage plans for container and RORO vessels in accordance with operational priorities, safety rules, and customer instructions.
•    Validate load and discharge lists, special cargo requirements, and DG documentation.
•    Coordinate with shipping lines, cargo control, and documentation teams to ensure cargo readiness.
•    Communicate vessel plans to execution teams and update plans as operational conditions change.
•    Allocate yard space for import, export, transshipment for Containers, RO-RO and General Cargo based on vessel schedules, DG segregation rules, and yard capacity.
•    Monitor yard utilization and identify potential congestion or operational conflicts.
•    Provide clear stacking and positioning instructions to yard strategist and equipment operators.
•    Adjust yard plans in real time based on cargo flow, equipment availability, and operational changes.
•    Prepare rail loading and unloading plans, including wagon allocation and cargo sequencing.
•    Coordinate with rail operators, gate teams, and yard execution staff to ensure timely rail operations.
•    Monitor rail performance and adjust plans to maintain service levels.
•    Ensure rail operations align with customer requirements and terminal capacity.
•    Work closely with Cargo Control, Gate Operations, Execution, and Commercial teams to ensure alignment between planning and real time operations.
•    Participate in daily operational briefings and shift handovers.
•    Support operational teams during disruptions, equipment breakdowns, or vessel schedule changes.
•    Ensure all planning activities comply with safety standards, IMDG regulations, and terminal procedures.
•    Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities to improve planning accuracy and efficiency.
•    Contribute to initiatives aimed at reducing re handles, improving productivity, and enhancing service reliability.
•    Maintain accurate records of plans, operational changes, and performance indicators.
•    Support the development and optimization of planning tools and TOS functionalities.
•    Assist in training new planners and operational staff in planning processes and TOS usage.
•    Provide planning support during peak periods or complex vessel/rail operations.
•    Share knowledge and best practices within the planning team.

Requirements:

Education & Experience
•    High school diploma. A college degree in Logistics, Operations Management, or related discipline is an advantage.
•    Requires intermediate English writing and speaking. Fluency and/or advanced level in an advantage.
•    Requires at 2–4 years of experience in terminal operations, vessel planning, yard planning, or rail logistics.
•    Experience in a container or RORO terminal environment is preferred.
•    Familiarity with TOS systems and operational planning tools.

Technical Skills & Knowledge Required 
•    Good understanding of container and RORO terminal operations, including vessel, yard, and rail planning processes.
•    Proficiency in Terminal Operating Systems (e.g., NAVIS N4, RBS, or similar).
•    Knowledge of IMDG regulations, DG segregation rules, and port safety standards.
•    Ability to interpret stowage plans, yard layouts, rail schedules, and operational forecasts.
•    Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

Qualifications & Experience
•    Minimum 3 years of experience in terminal operations, yard planning, or vessel planning (container and/or RORO).
•    Strong understanding of port logistics, cargo handling equipment, and yard operations.
•    Advanced knowledge of TOS systems and operational planning tools.
•    Education in Logistics, Maritime Studies, Supply Chain, or related field (preferred but not mandatory with strong experience).

Language Requirements
•    Fluent spoken and written Italian is a must. 
•    Fluent spoken and written English is a must.
